Driving into Older Age

Driving can be a key feature of independence, positive mental health and even longevity for older adults. Drivers over 65 are the least likely to be involved in traffic incidents but are the most likely to sustain a serious injury when a car crash does occur.

The following tips can help keep you and others safe on the road:

  • Get regular vision and hearing tests to identify and correct problems early
  • Eliminate distractions and noise while driving – turn music off, put your phone away, plan your route in advance
  • Read medication labels carefully and speak to your doctor when you have a new prescription to ensure your driving will not be impacted
  • Drive defensively and know your limitations – leave plenty of space between yourself and other cars, pay careful attention at intersections, drive in good conditions avoiding bad weather and rush hour traffic, when in doubt seek alternative transportation options
  • Choose a reliable car with automatic transmission and power steering – speak to a specialist about additional aids that can assist with driving
  • Take a course to update your knowledge such as RACV’s Years Ahead which is free for groups of 20 or more
Listen to the concerns of others and monitor any changes. If it is time to stop driving, be proactive in planning alternative transportation. There are many positives to lowering or eliminating car use.
