Mastering Medications

More than a third of Australians over 70 take five or more prescribed pills every day.

Continuous polypharmacy can be vital for good health; however, without careful monitoring, there can be unintended interactions, difficulties managing dosages and timing, and a variety of side-effects.

Things you can do to improve your medication safety:

  • Keep an up-to-date list of all your medications, including non-prescription supplements, with any special notes (time of day taken, number of doses taken with food etc.) and provide this list to any doctor that you see.
  • Make use of aids such as 7-day pill cases, TabTime handheld timer devices or smartphone apps such as the Medisafe medication reminder app.
  • If you make a mistake with your medicine, be sure to reach out to your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Things to ask your doctor when you are prescribed a new medication:

  • Why do I need this medicine, and how does it work?
  • When should I begin to see results from taking this medicine, and what should I do if I don’t see results?
  • Will this interact with my current prescriptions or with any dietary supplements?
  • What side effects can this medicine have?
  • Will this medicine affect my ability to drive or partake in other daily activities?
  • How long will I need this medicine, and when will it be reviewed?
  • Are there any other options for treatment?
