Grooming and Hygiene in Older Age

Continuing grooming and good hygiene habits helps to maintain dignity and a sense of self-worth as we age.

Changes to grooming and hygiene habits can lead to withdrawal from social interactions due to embarrassment about appearance or body odours and can cause poor self-esteem. Neglected hygiene can also cause infections and poor health if not carefully monitored.

So, why do changes in grooming and hygiene occur?

  • Physical challenges – if tasks such as showering or dressing become painful or create fear around falling, they may be neglected.
  • Cognitive impairment – Alzheimer’s disease and dementia can make tasks confusing or can cause forgetfulness about when a task was last performed.
  • Psychological changesdepression and other mental health conditions can cause people to neglect self-care tasks.

Most older adults would prefer to continue similar grooming habits as they get older. If they wear their hair a certain way, put on make-up, shave, maintain a beard or use specific products, and would like to continue these habits, they may require ongoing support to maintain their appearance.

Good hygiene must be maintained to promote healthy ageing. This includes regular showering, oral hygiene, regular laundering of clothing and bedding, and daily changes of clothes. It is important to seek help to complete these tasks if they are not being completed regularly.
