Indoor Gardening – Bringing the Outside In

Indoor plants can do wonders for our mental and physical health, they reduce stress and lower blood pressure. Horticulture therapy (or gardening with a therapeutic intention) has been shown to reduce agitation, depression and falls in people with dementia.

Gardening indoors provides many of the same benefits as outdoor gardening and can be more accessible to those with mobility limitations. It is also a great way to make your home more cheerful during the dreary winter months and in the ongoing periods of lockdown.

How to get started with indoor gardening:

  • Consider the best locations for plants in your home considering the areas with good light throughout the day.
  • Decide what kind of plants you would like to grow. A herb garden for the kitchen? Some cheerful flowers? Tomatoes? Easy care greenery?
  • Become involved with community gardening and plant groups either online or in-person for tips and tricks.
  • Learn how to care for your plants including their watering and fertilisation schedule.

If you or a loved one would like some help getting started with indoor gardening a carer can help with trips to the garden centre, potting and positioning plants and keeping up with ongoing plant care along with any other regular chores.
