Sleep; an essential piece in the health & wellness jigsaw.

Our sleep beliefs & habits throughout our lifetimes can vary enormously. We all know of or have parented a child who sleeps poorly; likewise, teenagers who don’t think they need it at all or sleep all day; busy people who would love a good night’s sleep & the genuine insomniac who just can’t find it!

Sleep, Health, Wellness

Good sleeping and bedtime habits include:

(Average sleep needs for an adult are 7-9 hours per day)

  • Regular times for going to bed & getting up
  • Relax for at least an hour before going to bed; unplug electronic devices
  • Avoid a full or empty stomach
  • Don’t spend too long in bed
  • Attend to the sleeping environment; Good bed, noise & light levels, air circulation, temperature
  • An evening nap can compromise overnight sleep
  • Get sunlight during the day
  • Quit smoking, be physically active
  • Reduce alcohol consumption & caffeine consumption (especially in the afternoon or evening); if necessary

Benefits of sleeping well include:

  • Good sleepers tend to eat fewer calories; weight management
  • Improves concentration, productivity
  • Maximises athletic and sporting performance
  • Reduces risk of heart disease & stroke
  • Improves your immune function
  • Reduces stress levels
  • Helps the body repair itself
  • Maintenance of emotional well being

The above list whilst not exhaustive makes a compelling case for the benefits of sleep and the difference our sleep patterns can make to our daily lives & long term health.

We need to pay more attention to good sleeping and take care of our bedtime habits.
