Living Well with Mobility Limitations
Mobility Limitations can be a risk factor for several conditions and lead to increased isolation and loneliness. A carer helps to make your home more accessible.
Team sports are often framed as a young person’s game, with older adults relegated to the sidelines or the couch to enjoy at a safe distance. But walking sports (team sports played without running) are making sports such as football, basketball, netball, cricket and hockey much more accessible.
Whatever the sport, a walking sport is more or less the same but rather than running, one foot must always stay on the ground, slowing the pace of gameplay and making it a lower impact activity. Keeping up with other players offers an engaging way to challenge and grow fitness in a fun, supportive environment.
Walking sport is a fantastic way to get back in the game for people who may have thought their sporting days were behind them. But it also provides an opportunity to try a new sport for the first time as an older adult.
Those who take part in adjusted sports report significant health benefits and greatly enjoy having a social group to get active with.
Walking sports were first developed in the UK, starting with football in 2011 and have very quickly become a global phenomenon, with many programs for various sports now available across Australia.
