Incontinence, or the involuntary loss of bladder or bowel control, affects a quarter of all adults in Australia but the vast majority do not seek professional help. Left untreated, incontinence can profoundly impact quality of life, lead to falls, isolation and loss of independence.
However, with the right care, incontinence can be managed and, in many cases, even cured.
What does continence care look like?
Continence care can be carried out by a community nurse who will visit you in your home. Together with you, they will look at your medical history, food and fluid intake and other factors to create an individualised continence management plan.
This plan may include some of the following strategies:

This includes following advice from Australia’s Chief Medical Officer about when to use equipment such as masks, gloves, aprons or gowns, and protective eyewear.
Most importantly, look after yourself and keep safe.
