Chronic pain – managing the challenges
In May 2020, the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare published the following about chronic pain:
Chronic pain is a common and complex condition characterised by persistent pain experienced on most days of the week. It affects 1 in 5 Australians aged 45 and over.
When it comes to managing chronic pain, an individualised, realistic & balanced approach is essential.
Chronic pain may never be wholly alleviated
Medicines alone are generally not the answer
Daily self-management strategies can be enormously beneficial
Non-medication based pain management strategies include:
- Exercise
- Relaxation techniques
- Mindfulness
- Distraction
- Diet & weight management
- Support groups
- Good sleep habits
